Overall concept. ‘’Valorising the Montenegrin Katuns through sustainable development of agriculture and tourism - KATUN’’ is a 2-year duration project, involving 9 partners from 4 countries. KATUN is innovative research project proposed by very compact interdisciplinary team of the researchers, offering a new approach to economic development of the Montenegrin mountain resources. Main goal. The main goal of the KATUN project is to provide knowledge bases for sustainability of the mountain agriculture and to enhance its competitiveness, to preserve important part of the cultural heritage of rural areas and boost the agro-tourism at the katuns, as specific spots or nuclei for further social-economic development on Montenegrin mountains. Agriculture is facing many challenges, especially in less developed parts of the country, while new opportunities are emerging in tourism. KATUN will link mountain agriculture and new tourism initiatives for the benefit of the rural society and thus for the whole country. The KATUN project is structured in a way that involves researches are highly complemented, providing integral development of the mountain regions in Montenegro. Detailed objectives of KATUN project are:  transfer knowledge and innovations to the agriculture and agro-tourism enabling them to be more competitive, thereby contributing to the development of a knowledge-based society;  generate entrepreneurship in the specific multifunctional sector of Montenegrin agriculture (mountainous livestock production) and ensuring the benefits are widely diffused;  achieve the new level of sustainable cultural heritage protection and its incorporation in modern agricultural and tourism tendencies;  demonstrate interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research approach by intensive collaborations of BTF, HIM and FTHM;  penetrate the ERA further in a sustainable manner, by longer-term collaborations with existing and new international RTD partners. KATUN is an innovative project due to the fact that for the first time research actors proposed unique – integrative solution for the Montenegrin mountain resources (to use all opportunities at the katuns and affirming each of the three aspects of sustainability). Thus, an innovativeness of the project lays primarily in its holistic approach (multidisciplinary and comprehensive treatment of all the aspects of the katuns in line with rural society expectations to breathe new life into the katuns by high integration of the sustainable development of agriculture and agro-tourism) and in the outcomes (specific forms of knowledge transfer, new dairy products, new types of tourism offer and for the first time valuable data on cultural-historical heritage). Strong partnership. The KATUN consortium goes beyond the call requirements in terms of interdisciplinarity of the national research team, internationalisation and integration with industrial partners. Each partner has an identified and essential role for the KATUN to be successful: BTF as the leading partner; 2 national RTD entities which will broaden the targeted research perimeter – HIM and FTHM; 4 international RTD entities recognised as leaders in their field, able to pull the research performed at the Montenegrin partners towards the highest levels of excellence in research – UL (Slovenia), SLU (Sweden), ITABC and UoB (Italy) and 2 national private entities - SMEs (HMD as medium-sized and TOH as small-sized enterprise) with which the collaboration will be very intensive. The international partners have already developed good collaboration with the Montenegrin partners which will ensure that their involvement maximises the chances to succeed in increasing the competitiveness of the Montenegrin industry. Sound implementation plan: six work packages. KATUN will be implemented through the following six work packages: WP1: Fostering of the traditional production technologies and marketing of the katuns products; WP2: Social dimension of the life in katuns – reinforcing their regional image; WP3: Diversification of economic activities at the katuns: boosting agro-tourism; WP4: Strengthening the research capacities (the human resources and research infrastructure); WP5: Maximize the sustainable impact and visibility of the KATUN project and WP6: Management. Adequate management structure and resources involved. The total budget is € 315,000. In total 118.5 men months will be mobilised for the project implementation, more than 30 researchers will be involved in KATUN. Therefore, as a whole, the project will mobilise the significant human resources of BTF, HIM, FTHM and their international partners, which is in line with the objectives since all types of activities are included in the project scope. Due to the large scale of the partnership, the management structure has been carefully defined to ensure an optimal coordination of scientific, human and financial resources, and that the project meets its objectives. The project management is composed of a Steering Committee (one representative per partnering entity), which will meet three times to review the project, a Project Leader, head of the project in charge of the overall project supervision, a Project Manager, 6 WP Leaders and their substitutes and a Financial Manager. Outputs. The outputs achieved are numerous: - RTD joint work with the partners in the 3 main RTD directions: Sustainable agriculture and forestry (NWFP), Agro-tourism in mountains and Protection and promotion of rural heritage. - Analytical efforts: survey on 500 consumers, survey of the households which use the katuns, - Transfer of knowledge: several actions to implement on-site knowledge, 6 workshops and 5 trainings in sustainable agriculture, food quality, boosting agro tourism for about 120 participants; - Networking: Dairy producers cluster and producer organisations, direct marketing opportunities in tourism and abroad, - Equipment: 5 pieces of lab equipment purchased for BTF and industry partners (HMD and TOH), and IT equipment for BTF HIM and FTHM purchased. - HR: 2 master students recruited and 4 PhD students supported - Education and RTD trainings: the mobility trainings organised for 7 Montenegrin researchers in the international partner institutions and several scientific (new challenges in rural economy and life, combat with climate changes) support trainings (preparation interdisciplinary project proposals, creation triple helix: academia - industry - decision makers) for 60 participants; - Dissemination: website, printed dissemination tools as 3 guidebooks and 2 manuals, maps and leaflets, two electronic newsletters per year and a press dossier. 1 conference, 2 roundtables 2 festival activities - Management: sound deliverables and competences increased. Results. The expected results are wide and ensure a good return on investment for the funding agency. - RTD measurable results: o 2 papers in scientific journals from the SCI list o 5 papers in other international journals o 8 fully written conference papers o 2 master thesis - Competitiveness impulse measurable results:  new farming practice implemented in goat, sheep and beef sector  new products (three types of cheese) created and their standardization achieved  4 new enterprise partners  2 projects with active involvement of enterprise partners. Impact. The impact of the KATUN project is expected to be very strong and innovative in offering different solutions to gain competitive advantages and to strengthen multifunctional agricultural sector in the mountain areas. The expected long term impacts of KATUN can be classified into four major categories: - Research Impact: The KATUN will be a strong step in creating interdisciplinary compact team of the best researchers and students; knowledge and competences will increase; as well as the quality and quantity of research outputs in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research; the KATUN project team will significantly contribute to the advancement of the research field and better penetrate the ERA. - Internationalisation: multiple and long-lasting cooperation with international partners with an integrated research agenda, leading to great synergies and teaming for RTD excellence; higher international visibility of the RTD outputs. - Economic impact: o competitiveness: intense cooperation with the domestic companies, including their associations; significant improvements in companies (innovations, technologies, etc.); strengthened competitiveness of the sector. o sustainability: new knowledge appropriately protected; exploitable outputs commercialised; new RTD ideas and projects launched; project proposals submitted to attract national and EU funding.
